United States Patent # 5,524,567 dated June 11, 1996
http://www.uspto.gov

Claim 1 of the United States Patent
1.
A trimming device for a water borne vessel having a longitudinal axis, said trimming device comprising:
a trim tab; means enabling said trim tab to be pivotally mounted to a vessel so as to be at least partially submerged in use; and a control mechanism which is coupled pivotally to said trim tab and is adapted to be coupled also to said vessel, said control mechanism comprising biasing means acting on said trim tab in such a way that when the vehicle is at rest,
said biasing means cause said trim tab to adopt an initial inclination relative to said longitudinal axis of said vessel such that, upon forward motion of the vessel, said trim tab is subjected to pressure by water flowing over it which results in lift on the vessel; said control mechanism further comprising motion retarding means automatically allowing said inclination of said trim tab relative to said longitudinal axis of said vessel to reduce gradually at a controlled rate under the influence of said pressure.

IMTEC, Chicago 1994
Demonstrating to the marine trade how RocketFlap trim tabs are totally automatic requiring no operator input while underway.

The RocketFlap system was first displayed in prototype form at IMTEC '94 Chicago Entered into the Innovation award, it reached the final round of judging on the show floor, but unfortunately lost out to the Volvo corporation and it's 'Speed Rails'. The RocketFlap generated attention even in it's basic prototype form. It's square tab and piano hinge secured with nut and bolts was consider very basic but more than adequate for prototype purposes.
